Designer Natasha Marshall: My Story, The Passion, The Joy.
Hello NNJM Design Fans, Let’s Talk a Little About Me and Fashion!
I believe I was destined to work in the fashion industry at a very young age. At four years old I use to cut out pictures in magazines and put my own sense of design to it. My mom would often buy a lot of magazines and give them to me. I think that gave me more momentum to continue to be more artistic.
I was a travel agent for ten years. In that time, I was able to capture a mass variety of designs and culture. It was amazing and it also made designing clothing more fun. My family has been a great inspiration. I would say about seventy percent of my family are into the arts; from painters, graphic designers, to great sketchers. I am also a great sketcher…definitely have to pat myself on the back for that. When people ask me what am I passionate about it brings unlimited excitement because it’s quite obvious it’s fashion. I have a passion for life, beauty, art, travel, all aesthetic styles, and thinking.
I was born in Jamaica W.I. I moved to New York at the age of twelve. I’m also a product of Irish descent. Living in New York is perfect for my career; a place that speaks fashion. Designing speaks volumes but it’s imperative that you get an education. I attended Sheepshead Bay high school in Brooklyn, NY also John Jay College of criminal justice and Berkeley College for fashion marketing. I absolutely love being a designer. My favorite part is seeing my design on someone.
The satisfaction is out of this world, it brings tears to my eyes, to be honest. It also gives the person a sense of confidence. Our image is very important so why wouldn’t you want to look great. If I could define fashion I will simply describe it in four words: beauty, powerful, sophistication and elegance. My greatest strength is my fire, my passion for fashion and my vision. Sometimes my greatest strength is my greatest weakness…demanding pressure from myself, over thinking also being a perfectionist. It undervalues my designs which I bring to life. Sometimes it’s very true what people say; we are our biggest critic. Don’t doubt yourself, if you can dream it, be about it.
My next project is a swimwear line which will be out in 2017. I am very excited about that. I got started in the industry in 2014. I have yet to put my glue gun down; I have to thank the man upstairs for guiding me. I have been designing clothing for ten years from sketching t-shirts and costumes for mas-Caribbean carnival festivities. As far as past projects my designs have been featured as a part of different marketing campaigns and entertainment themes. The venues were: Party People, DJ Anonymous, Under the Trees, Tickled Pink Fashion Show for Natalie Lamming, Shhhh.. for Nathalie Lamming, Luge Promotions, Sesame Flyers, Sesame Atlanta, Monday Wear for Trinidad Carnival as well as Fantasy Barbados.
